Volvo EC500 Electric 50-Ton Excavator Enters Real-World Testing Phase
Volvo has begun real-world testing of pre-production EC500 Electric excavators in Norway. The 50-ton class machine combines an on-board high-voltage battery with grid-connection capability via a 35-metre cable reel, enabling round-the-clock operation without recharging. Full production launch is scheduled for Spring 2027.
Volvo is developing its EC500 Electric excavator to match the performance of the diesel-powered model customers currently operate. The new machine significantly exceeds the size of the company's 30-ton EC230 Electric model.
Pre-production units are equipped with an on-board high-voltage battery supporting two to three hours of continuous operation. However, grid connectivity fundamentally changes the excavator's capability: a 35-metre cable reel connects the 50-ton class machine to site power infrastructure, enabling shift-after-shift operation without battery recharging. The intelligent battery-electric system adapts to variable 400V grid conditions, addressing real-world job-site power constraints while reducing demand on site electrical infrastructure.
The initial EC500 Electric unit is currently working in Norway across demanding applications including quarrying, road construction, and tunneling operations. This live testing program feeds direct feedback into the final development stages, with early data already informing product refinement before the official production launch scheduled for Spring 2027. The collaborative testing approach focuses on both technical performance and practical operator experience in challenging field conditions.
